... these two love birds were announcing their engagement! And today ... THEY'RE GETTING MARRIED! Many changes have happened in their worlds in the last 16 months, but the one thing that never changed was Kristin & Matt's love for each other. If anything, their love has only grown stronger!

So proud of all your hard work!
My friend Megan has been working her hiney off the last few years to get not one but two new businesses up & running. With the help of her friend & business partner, Danielle, they have started two successful companies: Soiree Event Designs and Bella Bridesmaid.
How I Got the Job: Megan Allen, 28
Megan AllenThe job: Owner
The businesses: One of my businesses, Soiree Event Designs, which focuses on wedding planning, is based in an office out of my new Brookside retail store, Bella Bridesmaid. Bella Bridesmaid was founded in San Francisco in 2000 and franchised in 2006. Our independently owned and operated shop opened here in Kansas City in October.
My role: The job is multifaceted. My co-owner and I keep busy with bridesmaid appointments, but also are busy with buying, bookkeeping and the wedding planning that operates out of the back of the store. We both wear many hats.
How long have you been in this position?
We’ve began operating Soiree Event Designs out of our homes since 2006.
Why did you decide to establish your own business?
First and foremost, I never saw myself not working, but I also want to have a family. I felt that if I started my own business at a young age, I could create the groundwork to make my life a lot more flexible when kids do come into the picture.
Although there is a ton of responsibility, long hours and dedication that goes into owning your own business — sometimes even more so than working for someone else — it is that much easier because you are doing something that you created. Plus, the successes of the company are so much more enjoyable when you can directly attribute them to the hard work you yourself put in.
How did you find your business partner?
Danielle Suarez, and I met in college and started our wedding planning company together based on both of our loves of entertaining. Also, we have very similar work ethics and goals.
Were there any organizations particularly helpful to you in starting this business?
Yes, the Small Business Administration Web site —www.sba.gov — was very helpful in terms of writing our business plan and the business development center at the University of Missouri-Kansas City offered us in-person guidance, which was nice.
What did you have to consider before starting this venture?
Too many things to count. Was it a good idea; was Kansas City a good fit for this concept; how would I come up with the capital needed to start; where would I put the shop; is this something I can see myself doing for many, many years to come; can I make money doing this; do I know enough about business to run my own company? The business plan helped answer a lot of those questions.
Are there any low points as a small business owner?
There are many days I get extremely frustrated and discouraged because there is a lot of “figuring it out.” Before, when I worked for someone else, if something didn’t go right or I didn’t know how to do something, there was always someone to go to and ask for guidance or help. Now it’s up to me and Danielle.
However, you overcome those low points by taking a step back, thinking through it logically and taking the time to do it right. Plus, there are always other small business owners out there that I can consult. They may not do the exact same thing I do, but I’m sure they’ve been in a relatable situation.
What is your advice for others wanting to start their own businesses?
Go for it! Honestly, that sounds corny, but I think you can sometimes be your own worst enemy by talking yourself out of something. However, don’t rush into it. You’ve got to do the groundwork to give your business a successful foundation. Do your research, write a business plan and have multiple people read it and make many revisions to it, and work really, really hard.
What is your educational and work experience?
I have my bachelor’s degree in advertising from the University of Kansas (May 2003). My work experience is in private and corporate event planning. My first career job was working for Kansas City’s The Catering Co., now called Inspired Occasions. Then I worked as catering manager for Restaurant Associates in Chicago. I also have been an account manager for Barkley advertising in Kansas City.
How does this retail store fit into your long-term career plans?
I plan to always be in this industry, however, my businesses give me the desire to always seek new business opportunities.

I give thanks
I was going to compile pictures of all the things I'm thankful for today, but I was afraid there would be too many and/or I might leave someone or something out by accident.
This year has been full of ups & downs for me ... but I give thanks for the following:
- A family that has been very supportive of me this year! Everything from letting Minnie and me move in when we were homeless, to helping me get a new dishwasher for my kitchen! My family helped me with all the highs and lows associated with buying my first home. With my niece on the way ... we have so much more to be thankful for into the next year. Thanks!
- My friends! My work friends see me almost daily and they are there when we need a laugh to get through a long work-week. My girls from high school are friends I can count on at all times. My college friends are wonderful and we can pick up from where we last left off even though it might have been months since I've seen them. Thanks!
- Weddings & baby showers! With 10+ weddings this year and 4+ babies on the way ... it shows how many wonderful people want me to be a part of the big events in their life. Thanks for letting me share in your important days ... I couldn't be happier and I wouldn't miss these things for the world! Thanks!
- My first home! What a crazy ride it has been, but I'm finally in a place I can call home ... and I. Love. It. This condo is the place I was meant to be, and even though it was quite the journey to get here ... it was worth it. Thanks!
- My job! Now that I'm half-way into my 5th year of teaching, I know this is what I'm meant to be doing. Each year, I'm given a bigger and bigger challenge in my classroom, and it helps me to push myself to be a better teacher. Not every day is fun or easy, but at the end of the year, it's amazing to see all the progress I've helped my students to make. Thanks!
- Minnie! I'm so thankful that I have her in my life. Those of you that are dog or pet people can probably appreciate a great pet like Minnie. She makes me smile each and every day and teaches me how to be more patient. Thanks!

Happy, happy couple!
Yesterday was the last of the weddings, Jenny & Robs. The ceremony was beautiful and the reception was lots of fun! Everyone looked pretty and Jenny & Rob looked VERY happy!
Here are a few pics from the reception.
Mr. & Mrs. Stilley enjoying their first dance as a married couple:
And here they are letting loose before the rest of their family & friends joined them on the dance floor:
I love this pic of Jenny. You can also see the other women in her family in the picture. On the left is her sister, Anne ... then Mom, Pat and then Jenny. Everyone looked so pretty!
Congrats to my 2 former roomies! The day was wonderful. Hope you enjoy this time off and that you made many, many memories over the weekend! XOXOXXO

What to wear? What to wear?
This weekend, I have wedding #74 for the year! Actually, it hasn't been that many, but I have lost count at this point.
Jenny & Rob are getting married on Saturday! Yippee!
What I don't know, is what the hell I should wear. Yes, I have a trillion bridesmaid dresses to wear, but none of them are great for cold weather. When it gets cold out, all I really want to wear are jeans & a KU hoodie. I promise I won't show up in that, but I do need to find some time to go out shopping between now and Saturday afternoon! Yikes!
Suggestions for winter wedding attire? Anyone seen anything cute lately?

Am I Down?
Ashley & Drew definitely helped to end most of our tours on the "wedding circuit" with a bang!
It was a beautiful (and eventful) wedding and I wouldn't have missed it for the world!
Here is the happy couple on the way from the church to the reception site, the Hobbs building (same place that Megan & John had their reception last weekend) with a stop in between at the Nelson for wedding party pictures! I was looking for a pic of Ash and me, but with all the running around on Saturday, we must have missed an opportunity to take one. :(
Ashley looked beautiful and Drew was very handsome.
The rehearsal dinner was full of both funny & touching toasts from family and friends. The reception was full of food, drinks and dancing! The girls hung out all weekend and we made lots of memories, had many laughs and tried to keep the tears to a minimum!
Ashley & Drew ... I am SO happy for you both and I hope you are enjoying your time away and catching up on all your sleep! Thanks for a GREAT weekend!

To the next happy couple!
Here is a sweet family photo, Ashley, Drew & Doc (Brooks hadn't joined the family yet). I took this in Sacramento two summers ago when I went to visit Ashley!
Today is the wedding and at this time tomorrow, all the wedding stress & anxiety & chaos will be over and Ashley & Drew will be off to their honeymoon!
I'm SO happy for the two of you and I'm very honored to be a part of your big day!

Bridesmaid X 9
I had to steal this picture from Sarah, because my version had a bunch of closed eyes.
Here are all the bridesmaids waiting to walk down the aisle at Megan & John's wedding. The 9 of us are:
Megan's sister, Elizabeth,
High school friends, Me & Emilie,
College friends, Danielle & Sarah,
John's sisters, Jenny, Jody, Joan & Meredith!
Had a blast with you girls! The whole weekend was great. Be happy that you all don't have to wear the gray shoes again this weekend! ;)

Lots of laughs!
Here are the 6 of us at Megan's wedding last night! This picture actually looks very similar to the picture from Julie's wedding in July.Everything about the whole day went off without a hitch! Tons of memories were made and there were some happy tears and lots of laughs. We even ended the evening with Becca having a crazy urge to slide under all the layers on Megan's dress. I don't remember ever laughing that hard ... and I really can't wait to see the pictures from that!
Unfortunately, my little germy kiddos gave me some sort of cold that started on Thursday and is getting worse by the day. By the end of both nights, I had completely lost my voice and had a hard time breathing, but I still had a blast! I only wish I had lasted a bit longer instead of hurrying home to pop some meds and climb into my bed!
Megan & John leave for their honeymoon Monday, and I know they'll have a blast relaxing and enjoying being done with all the chaos that comes with planning a wedding.
I love you both so much and I'm thrilled that you are now husband & wife!

It's almost wedding time again
This summer was very busy with weddings and showers. It was overwhelming at times, but also a lot of fun since I got to see my friends that I don't normally see that often.
This weekend was the start of more wedding events. I'm going to be a bridesmaid in two of my best friends' weddings this October. The 11th & the 18th to be exact, so the countdown is officially on now. The girls came in town for a shower for Megan (this morning) and I also got to go to a shower for my friend Kyle and his bride-to-be, Annie, last night!
Here are a few pics from today's shower. The only this missing was Becca. She was out of town shooting some fancy schmancy wedding. We missed you, Bec!!!
Here are the 5 of us at the "kids table" in the kitchen while the moms sat in the dining room. From left to right: Julie, Emilie, the bride - Megan, Kristin and me.
Here is Meg getting ready to open her presents. We had a "personal" shower which is always fun. I love getting to go to girlie showers with my girls!
And here we are outside (the weather was BEAUTIFUL this weekend) playing our shower game. We were preparing Megan for possible worst case wedding scenarios. Example: Would you rather have no make-up for the ceremony OR have your hair fall out? Would you rather have no hotel reservation on your honeymoon OR have your bed infested with bed bugs? Would you rather have rain on your wedding day OR rain on the honeymoon! You can see the range of reactions to some of the scenarios in this picture! Megan was very calm in her answers. It was nice to see that she knows that a lot of things are out of your control when it comes to your wedding day. Really ... does it matter? Probably not!
I had fun this weekend getting to catch up a little with the girls and getting to show off my pad to most of them. Miss you girls every time you leave and can't wait to see you the next time you are back!

Just beautiful!
Last week, I posted a link to the engagement pictures for Megan & John. Now I have a few of the beautiful wedding pictures that Kelley took at Julie & Mike's wedding! You HAVE to go check out her portfolios on her website!
As someone that loves photography, it was so much fun to see Kelley and her assistant in action! She also rode on the "party bus" with us from the ceremony to the reception, so we got to see her work up close (sitting on the coolers & standing in the door!)!
Kelley has a blog that she keeps updated with some of her favorite pics from the weddings, family shoots, engagement shoots, etc, that she takes. I've been checking back daily to see if she has posted any from Julie & Mike's wedding ... and sure enough, on Sunday she did!
You have to go check out all the pictures, but here are a few of my favorites!

Now, now. Don't drink too much!
Here's a fun pic of Kristin and me on our Summer Wedding Circuit ... with our "shot glasses" of wine!We had a blast at last weekend's wedding for two of our friends from high school. It was fun because we got to hang out with lots of old friends that I haven't seen in a really long time. We also went out to the Power & Light district afterward. I haven't been down there too much, so it was fun to see the summer crowd.
Thanks, KK! I had a blast hanging out with you ... 2 wedding weekends in a row!

My little Megan & John ... all grown up!
I was there when John proposed to Megan, my oldest friend, at the Southwest boarding gate in Chicago. I was there when Megan started dress shopping for THE dress. I'll be there for the big day in October!
Megan is having Tyler Wirken shoot her wedding. Tyler and my friend, Becca, work together as 2 of the best photographers in Kansas City!
This morning, I woke up and checked my e-mail to find that Megan had shared the link to a blog post that Tyler had written with pictures from Megan & John's engagement shoot! They are fabulous! The pictures are fun, bright and show just how much love is shared between Megan & John. Go check the pictures out for yourself!

My Girls!
Here is just one pic from the fabulous wedding. I "borrowed" it from someone else's set of pictures. This will have to do for MY sharing until I can find some time to get my own pics uploaded.
The wedding was WONDERFUL! I couldn't have had more fun. Julie looked like a Barbie and it was tons of fun to hang out with family and friends from both the groom & the bride's side!
Thanks to Mike & Julie for letting me be a part of their weekend. :)

In honor of the Brides & Grooms
I am going to be in Julie & Mike's wedding today (hopefully, not falling down the aisle). But, I'm missing Amy & TJ's wedding that is today, too. I thought I post these fun luggage tags I found online.
